Apply for departing Australia superannuation payment and/or payment of unclaimed superannuation money: how to apply

This system will enable you to apply online for the departing Australia superannuation payment (DASP) from both super funds and the ATO. Please take some time to read through this section so you know what information you will need to provide to apply for your superannuation benefits using this system.

What you will be asked to provide

To help us confirm your identity and eligibility and process your application, you will need to provide the following information:

  • Your name, date of birth and other personal details.
  • Your e-mail address.
  • Your passport country.
  • Your passport number.
  • Your Australian Tax File Number (optional).
  • Your superannuation account details - including your super fund's Australian Business Number (ABN). You may use the system to conduct a search for the ABN based on the fund's name.

The application process

It will take approximately 30 minutes to complete the application online.

Confirm identity and eligibility

You will be asked to provide personal details such as your name, date of birth, tax file number (TFN) and passport details. This information, (except your TFN), will be passed to the Department of Home Affairs to establish whether or not you are eligible for a DASP and whether you have held a working holiday maker (WHM) visa. Confirmation of your eligibility may take a few seconds. If you are eligible you can then complete your application.

If you are applying for a DASP, you may only submit your application if you have departed Australia and your visa has ceased to be in effect (for example, it has expired or been cancelled). If you are still in Australia, or your visa is still active, you may save an application, but it cannot be submitted to your super fund(s).

Note: You must enter exactly the same personal details each time you access this system.

Secret password

To protect your information, when you first enter the system you will be asked to create a 'shared secret' by selecting a question and supplying your answer. This system will encrypt and securely store this information. If you ever need to return to view or update your application or enter a new application, you will be asked to answer your question. You (or unauthorised persons) will not be able to proceed unless you supply the correct answer.

System searches for your superannuation

If the Department of Home Affairs confirms you are eligible to apply for a DASP you will be able to submit your application. If you provide your TFN, the system will search the ATO’s records to identify the super fund(s) where your superannuation benefits may be held. In some circumstances super fund(s) may have transferred monies to the ATO as unclaimed superannuation money. If this has happened, you will be able to see your ATO-held money as well.

Add your contact and other personal details

You will need to provide your current contact details including your email and postal address. Your super fund and/or the ATO may need to contact you regarding your DASP application.

Your visa information

You will see the following if you ever held a working holiday maker visa:

The Department of Home Affairs has advised that you have held a working holiday maker (WHM) visa(s).

Add your superannuation details

If the system search did not identify all (or any) of your superannuation accounts, you have the option to add a new application. To do this, you will need the Australian Business Number (ABN) of the super fund or the ATO, depending on who holds your superannuation money. You will also need details of your super account on your superannuation statement.

If you change your mind and no longer wish to claim your super you can choose to delete your submitted application. However, you will need to contact your super fund to let them know of your decision, otherwise, they may continue to process your submitted application.

If you have not departed Australia or your visa is still in effect

When applying for a DASP, if the Department of Home Affairs states that you have not yet departed Australia or that your visa is still in effect, you can still record your details in the system and save your application(s). You may re-enter the system to update and submit your application(s) once you have departed Australia.

If you have departed Australia but your visa is still in effect, you may request the Department of Home Affairs to cancel your visa.

Submitting your application

Before you submit your application check the details carefully as they cannot be changed once you have chosen to submit your application.

As soon as you submit your application(s), an email confirming the information in your application will be sent to the email address you provided. Your super fund and/or the ATO will also be notified that your application is available for processing.

Processing the application

Your super fund(s) and/or the ATO will access this system to process your application. In some circumstances they may need to contact you to verify the information you have provided or to seek further information. Generally, you will receive the payment within 28 days of your super fund(s) or the ATO receiving the information they require.

If your application is for ATO-held superannuation, payment will be made direct to an Australian financial institution account where the ATO holds valid financial institution account details for you.

If your superannuation benefits have been transferred to another super fund or the ATO, or if your super fund rejects your application, you will be notified by email.

Checking progress

You must contact your super fund directly to check the progress of your DASP application and the ATO for progress of any applications for monies held by us. Although you are able to re-enter this system and view applications you have submitted, there is no indication about whether or not your application has been processed.

Returning to this system

Each time you re-enter this system you will be requested to again provide your personal details and to supply the answer to the 'secret' question you selected the first time. You must supply exactly the same tax file number, name, passport and date of birth each time you access the system.

When you re-enter the system, you will be able to create new applications and update any applications you have saved and not submitted. You will be able to view, but not change, any applications already submitted to your super fund(s). You may also update your contact details, (email, postal and telephone).
